The Bible in Eight Hours

Rev. Bill Burton, OFM   New presenter to Houston!
8:30 a.m – 4:30 p.m.
The Bible is our salvation story. Yet the Hebrew Scriptures (Old Testament) and the New Testament, written thousands of years ago, come from cultures now extinct that were very different from our own. It takes work to recapture the original meaning of these ancient and privileged texts so that we can understand them. During our sessions we will closely look at the cultures from which these texts come. Understanding the contexts (e.g., geographical, historical, cultural) from which the Bible emerged will make our understanding of the Saving Word easier and more accurate.

Table Fellowship of Jesus in the New Testament: What Does It Mean?

Rev. Bill Burton, OFM 7 p.m. Friday – 2 p.m. Sunday
A subtle but significant way the teaching of Jesus is communicated is through the depiction of the table fellowship of Jesus and his disciples, particularly in Luke’s Gospel and Acts of the Apostles. During our time together we are going to try to recapture the life-giving meaning of these scenes and attempt to appreciate more fully the importance of Jesus’ use of the meal setting and table fellowship.

Warren Broussard, SJ & Monica Frazier
7 p.m. Friday – 2 p.m. Sunday
We sometimes can feel the same disillusionment and isolation as the disciples who were heading toward Emmaus after Jesus’ death. Yet when we invite Jesus into our story and press him to stay with us, we find renewed hope and a sense of mission that emboldens us to return to the places from which we came. Through quiet reflection, sharing, and prayer rooted in Scripture, this weekend retreat will help us uncover ways that God is inviting each of us to move from complacency to mission.

Discipleship and the Paschal Mystery: “If we endure with him, we shall reign with him”

Rev. Jerome Neyrey, SJ
7 p.m. Friday – 2 p.m. Sunday
The map for our Lenten journey will be the Gospels. We learn how to “walk the walk” of Jesus and not just to “talk the talk.” On his way to Jerusalem, Jesus teaches his “way” of acting, thinking and valuing. He models prayer for his disciples. All actions toward Jesus in the Passion narratives were forms of ridicule, contempt, taunt and shame. Finally, all of the final chapters of each Gospel proclaim that “God vindicated this Jesus, whom you shamed and dishonored.” The retreat reflections will provide a clear orientation on how to travel with Jesus during Lent.
