Valerie Dunne, Staff Associate attended a three-year training program for Spiritual Direction and is a certified spiritual director. She is a graduate of the Pastoral Formation Institute. Valerie is currently active in a women’s prayer group and along with her husband Michael, is part of a team facilitating evenings for married couples.

Details: THAT ALL MAY BE ONE (Video Series) Prayer of Jesus You are invited to come and explore timeless questions that reveal our inherent unity as human beings through the power of three different but related videos. Three Sunday afternoons this Fall 1 – 4:30 p.m. The first movie September 26th OH MY GOD Peter Rodger roams the world to ask one question: “What is God?” October 3rd ONE Four friends decide to ask the world twenty perennial questions like, “Why is there suffering?” “Why is there poverty?” “How does one obtain true peace?” October 31st WITH ONE VOICE Contemporary mystics engage these same questions and share their stories. Elenore Woronick, r.c. has been trained in spiritual direction and has a certificate in Pastoral Ministry. Sr. Elenore has experience giving spiritual direction, directed retreats and prayer programs, especially days of Silence and Solitude. She has given the thirty-day retreat experience of the Spiritual Exercises of St. Ignatius of Loyola.

Details: Day of Silence and Solitude This day offers an opportunity to withdraw from daily activities to pray and to reflect on your relationship with God in an atmosphere of silence and solitude. Details: A contemplative day of prayer in silence and solitude. St. Therese of the Child Jesus and of the Holy Face (Lisieux), a Carmelite nun and Doctor of the Church, speaks with candor about her “childish desires” in her younger years. At age 22, however, she writes, “And now I have no other desire except to love Jesus unto folly.” In prayer, we shall let her teach us how God purified her desires through Love until she was freed from her own desires so as to receive God’s desire. God’s desire then became her source of spiritual joy until her death of Love. Day includes a light lunch.

Beverly Bienemann, Staff Associate is a retired educator, who has been married for 48 years. She has four grown children and six grandchildren. She holds a Masters in theology from Immaculate Conception Seminary and is a graduate and former teacher of the Pastoral Formation Institute. She also holds a Masters Degree in counseling from St. John’s University. Bev is a spiritual director who has been involved in ministry for over 30 years. She is a retreat director, frequent speaker and teacher throughout the Metropolitan area. Mary Gallagher, Staff Associate is a retired registered nurse, mother and grandmother. She has been certified as a spiritual director since 1990 and is active as a director and in supervision of other spiritual directors. Mary is a grief counselor and has led widow and widowers workshops both in her parish and at the Cenacle.

Details: An introduction to the teachings of St. John of the Cross, Carmelite and Doctor of the Church, is offered by Kieran Kavanaugh, O.C.D. His text will be used for our study in a series of seven (7) monthly sessions,beginning Oct. 20th, intended as an in-depth spiritual formation program. As such, each participant is expected to read, study, and pray the assigned texts as preparation for the group discussion each month. Title: Am I Just Another Grain of Sand on the Seashore?

Madeline Birmingham, r.c. has been a Cenacle Sister for over 50 years. Much of her ministry has been aimed at helping others to deepen their relationship with God through prayer that is warm and personal. She has also worked in training programs for the formation of spiritual directors and has supervised many directors in their ministry. Arleen Dietzel is a young and energetic grandmother who has had a close relationship with the Cenacle since her 16th birthday. She has had a long experience as a facilitator with ALANON and 12 Step programs. A participant in the Cenacle Graced Journey, she looks forward to assisting in new workshops with Cenacle staff.

He is a certified facilitator of Myers Briggs Personality Inventory and along with his wife Bev, has facilitated this instrument throughout the area. For the last 15 years he has enjoyed leading many days of prayer and retreats on Long Island.

Robert Freudenberg, Staff Associate is married and the father of six children and grandfather of twelve. He is a retired Suffolk County Police Officer. He has a keen interest in spirituality and was certified as a spiritual director in 2003. Bob has served in a variety of ministries in the Church including facilitating a Bible study group, and coordinating Renew 2000, as well as a divorced and separated group for his parish. Barbara Regan, r.c., MA, MTS, a Cenacle Sister, has 26 years of experience leading retreats and co-leading with women and men from coast to coast.

Details: In her spiritual classic The Reed of God, Caryll Houselander tells us that there are things that refuse to be violated by speed, that demand at least their proper time of growth. In this tender time of Advent, this silent day will be an opportunity to allow Houselander’s wisdom to speak to us of the virginal quality of emptiness. Let us look to the Blessed Virgin to discover how we might become hollow reeds, empty chalices or warm nests ready to receive the growth of the hidden Christ. What infinite music might God be looking to play in us as we anticipate the coming of Jesus? The program will include presentations, time for personal prayer and sharing. Judith Osterburg, r.c., M.Div. a Sister of the Cenacle has been involved in retreat work for over 25 years. She has been involved in spiritual direction, directing the Spiritual Exercises, directed retreats as well as other retreats. Sr. Judith is a supervisor of spiritual directors and has been on the staff of a Spiritual Direction Training Program here on Long Island. She also has been on the summer staff of St. Ignatius Retreat House, Manhasset for their internship program to train spiritual directors to give directed retreats. Jack Gaudet, Staff Associate has been a member of St. Thomas More parish in Hauppauge, NY for 30 years. Jack is a certified spiritual director and on the associate staff at the Cenacle. He is a graduate of the College of the Holy Cross and the diocesan Pastoral Formation Institute. He has been married to Marcia for 45 years and they have four children and eight grandchildren. Jack and Marcia have worked together in Marriage Enrichment and Marriage Preparation Ministry in the parish and the diocese for 35 years, and have given numerous retreats and days of prayer together and separately.

Details: Working with a dream in spiritual direction provides directees with the opportunity to see dreams as a gift from God while working to explore and integrate the message of the dream into their lives. Title: Finding Your Voice - 12 Step Day for Women

Ann Schehr is a Licensed Mental Health Counselor as well as a Certified Rehabilitation Counselor with a 30 year history of giving retreats to people in recovery. She currently works as a psychiatric rehabilitation practitioner in Rockland County and lives in Lake Peekskill, NY. Pamela Carlton is a Board Certified clinical Music Therapist with a background in psychiatric and medical music therapy. She currently works with hospitalized medically ill children as well as in private practice with clients recovering from mental illness, traumatic brain injury, addiction and codependency. She leads weekend retreats for women recovering from addiction and lives in Huntington, N.Y.

In her spiritual classic The Interior Castle, St. Teresa of Jesus (Avila) describes the path to union with God through the imagery of seven dwelling places. God IS in the center and seventh dwelling place of the castle. In prayer, we shall let St. Teresa teach us the reasons why so many persons remain stuck in the third dwelling places, and some effective remedies to get unstuck so as to move further on the path to deeper union with God. She is a spiritual director and has given seminars and retreats for those in need of healing from trauma.

Details: The journey inward is a precious and sometimes painful process. Often our experience of suffering can be very lonely.
